What is the Conservation method of
framing?
"Conservation framing" or "Archival
framing" is the use of special framing
materials that prevent deterioration
from acids in paper and fading from
ultraviolet light from the sun and
artificial lighting.
Some of these special materials
include:
Alpha-rag mats made from cotton fiber so that they are
acid-free throughout.
Acid-free mounting hinges or archival mounting
corners to attach artwork to an acid-free backing.
Conservation glass blocks 97% of ultra-violet rays,
which protects artwork from fading caused by sunlight
and artificial lights.
What is Drymounting?
The term drymounting refers to the process of permanently
adhering artwork to a backing. It requires heat-activated
adhesive and a drymounting press that supplies heat and
pressure. Drymounting helps flatten artwork and prevents it
from rippling or warping. Drymounting is not considered a
conservation method and not advised for original artwork
and other valuable collectibles.
