Class Descriptions
A Day in the Life of a Conservator Sunday 12:30 – 1:30 pm
Paul Storch of Museum Science Consultants members $10 /non-members $15
As framers, we all know that there are restoration jobs that are beyond our expertise and that should be referred to a conservator. But exactly what services can this person provide? What types of projects do they typically work on? Come to this session and get a glimpse into a ‘day in the life’ with some actual examples of recent projects Paul has completed, such as a Civil War Navy officer’s sword with belts and a gilt picture frame. Attendees are encouraged to bring lots of questions and problems they have encountered with items or frames needing restoration work or that present unique mounting challenges.
Period Design Sunday 12:30 – 2:30 pm
Michael Pacitti Special UMAF Show price: members $15 /non-members $25
Take an in-depth look at ornamentation as it applies to custom framing and interior design to better understand the relationship of period design to style design. Michael will discuss a timeline of 13 specific time periods dating from the ancient Egyptians all the way to the post-modernists. Discover how each era reveals its own categories of architecture, art, motifs, patterns and design. With this knowledge, you’ll be able to relate the period design to custom frames, bringing your expertise to a new level. This class will show you how to recognize that relationship and apply it to your designs. The Period Design Seminar includes a 477 page Color Flipbook for each participant attending the seminar as well as a Certificate of Achievement fro IDEC Interior Design Educators Council. Michael Pacitti is a CPF and also member of the Color Marketing Group CMG and ASID American Association of Interior Designers. NOTE: This class is an accredited class for designers needing continuing education credits.
Design Elements – Make Them Work for You Sunday 3:00 – 4:00pm
Linda Pujo, MCPF members $10 /non-members $15
Do you know the six recognized design elements? Do you know the five other design factors? Learn and see how they can work together to create stunning frame designs. This will not be just a boring discussion of definitions. Plenty of samples will be provided for the “touchy-feely” aspect for framers’ enjoyment – along with lots of slides (in a PowerPoint presentation) for additional ideas to stimulate creativity in frame design.
The “official” design elements (plus some design factors) are discussed, with ways to ensure they are appropriate for the artwork and frame design. Most framers don’t consciously think about these, specifically, during the design process – but examining them individually creates a better understanding of how (and why) their frame designs work – or not.
Fundamentals of Glazing Sunday 3:00 – 5:00pm
Jim Miller, MCPF GCF members $15 /non-members $25
Spike your framing expertise with this essential information on using glass and acrylic as elements of your frame designs. Add value to your framing and profit to your bottom line, as Jim clears away confusion about all the high technology choices and shows how to design the right glazing into every framing job. Learn how to help customers understand and appreciate the features and benefits of selecting the right glazing. Set yourself apart from the competition and earn more profitable orders by involving customers with demonstrations and point-of-purchase models. An illustrated handout, useful product samples, and helpful tips for proper acrylic cutting, cleaning, handling, and scratch removal techniques are all included in this 2-hour class.
Framing Facelifts Sunday 4:15 – 5:15pm
Linda Pujo, MCPF members $10 /non-members $15
This class is all about creating another potential source of revenue for framers – fixing those awful designs we were all guilty of during the 70s, 80s, and even 90s. The discussion will take a look at the trends that were prevalent during previous decades (music, fashion, interior design – and FRAMING).
Then, after acknowledging how awful our framing was back then, how can we FIX it? That is – if the customer still loves the artwork inside that hideous framing package. This class takes a look at the framing design trends (as well as materials used) back in the 70s, 80s and 90s. Actual samples of dated styles and materials will be provided – along with samples and ideas for updating them. This class includes pass-around samples and PowerPoint slides.
Breakfast Buffet: Social Media Changes the Marketing Game Monday 7:30 – 9:00am
Carrie Statz, the Marketing Facility, Dakota County Technical College members $15 /non-members $25
A Full breakfast buffet, starting at 7am, is included with this seminar
Once used as a quirky tool to stay in touch with old friends, the various forms of social media have now evolved into a massive marketing platform, capable of delivering ultra-targeted ads to both local and global audiences. Social media marketing increases the visibility of businesses, generates web traffic, engages customers leading to sales, and aids in branding, market research and building customer contact lists. Many social media seminars are designed to sell social media management services. This presentation was put together specifically for small business owners in our industry to objectively explore social media, its effective use as a business-building tool, and options for managing a social media campaign.
This session is appropriate for anyone wanting to understand how social media works, considering starting a social media marketing campaign, and those who are looking to increase the effectiveness of a current social media marketing effort.
Shop Talk 101: Tools & Tips, Gadgets & Gizmos Monday 9:15 – 10:15am
Linda Pujo, MCPF members $10 /non-members $15
An intro-level class on various items for use in a frame shop, featuring common and not-so-common items, along with common and not-so-common uses for them. WHAT they can do, WHY use them, and HOW to use them.
For beginner and mid-level framers (experienced framers may benefit too – learning about new products from other industries – valuable products that can be adapted for framing). Class content includes over 30 various items for discussion (and pass-around samples for examination), with several applications for their use.
Order Processing – Power Systems Monday 9:15 – 11:15am
Jim Miller, MCPF GCF members $15 /non-members $25
This class helps business owners develop the most effective order processing system for frame shops of all types and sizes. Illustrated handouts describe how order processing works, and how common problems may be avoided. An interactive lecture, this class responds to the needs of framers, shop owners and managers. Learn how to create an audit trail, how to keep track of every order at all times, how to make sure the materials are there when needed, and how to solve order-handling problems. Develop a simplified, efficient, trouble-free order processing system for your own custom picture framing business.
The Myth of Acid Free Monday 12:30 – 2:30pm
Jim Miller, MCPF GCF members $15 /non-members $25
This session is all about the differences among the various matboard types, such as “acid free”, alpha cellulose, and 100% cotton. The truth and consequences of using all types will be covered in detail, with emphasis on what’s important for preservation framing, and why. Learn why fiber composition is only part of the story. Definitions of technical terms and “buzz words” will be included, and we will discuss the recommended applications for each type of matboard.
